Welcome to the Owen Barfield Society
Owen Barfield, one of the great minds in the Anglophone world in the twentieth century, had a writing career that spanned seventy-five years. Sometimes known as the “first and last Inkling” or “the British Heidegger,” he is more than these labels. Poet, novelist, philosopher, essayist, dramatist, journalist, and friend not only to the C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien, but to Walter de la Mare, David Bohm, Philip Wheelwright, Henry Corbin, and many others. He was a frequent combatant of T. S. Eliot, who nevertheless said that one day Barfield would make his mark, and that Barfield's books made him proud to be a publisher. The Owen Barfield Society was founded in 1998, the centenary of Barfield’s birth. It aims to promote a wider and deeper understanding of Barfield’s life, times, thought, and work as well as exploring the many ways in which his work remains relevant to our own time. Each year we hold events online and in person to preserve his spirit of friendliness, good humor, and commitment to creative inquiry. New members are very welcome to join us.
